R.V. Dumping Station Temporarily Closed at Sudbury Wastewater Treatment Plant

Construction to increase the capacity of the Sudbury Wastewater Treatment Plant on Kelly Lake Road will temporarily close the R.V. Dumping Station at that site, effective Monday, June 6. Recreational vehicle motorists are directed to alternate dump sites at the Valley East Wastewater Treatment Plant, 999 Yorkshire Drive, Val Caron and the Chelmsford Wastewater Treatment Plant, 265 Laurette Street.

The decision to close the Sudbury Wastewater Treatment Plant R.V. Dumping Station has been made for the safety of motorists. Access to the dumping station is through an active construction zone. The City of Greater Sudbury apologizes for the inconvenience.

Application deadline for citizen appointment to advisory panels extended

The application deadline for residents to apply for appointment to City
of Greater Sudbury advisory panels has been extended to March 16, 2011
at 4:30 p.m. Application forms are available at the City Clerk’s
Office on the 2nd floor of Tom Davies Square; at Citizen Service Centres
in Capreol, Chelmsford, Dowling, Garson, Hanmer and Lively; or online at

Applications For Municipal Elections Officials Still Being Accepted

Election Day is fast approaching, and the City of Greater Sudbury would like to remind residents that applications are still being accepted for election official positions. The deadline for application has been extended to Thursday, September 30, 2010.

Workers are sought for the following positions during Advance Polls (October 16, 17, 18 and 19):

- Deputy Returning Officers
- Electronic Poll Clerks
- Electronic Revision Clerks
- Voter Assist Terminal Operators
- Equipment Deputy Returning Officers
- Revision Clerks.

Workers are also sought for the following positions for Election Day, Monday, October 25:

- Deputy Returning Officers
- Equipment Deputy Returning Officers
- Revision Clerks
- Parking lot attendants
- Greeters

Successful applicants are required to attend a training session and may require sole access to a vehicle and cell phone as well as have the ability to carry heavy items.

The deadline to apply for these positions is Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 4:30 p.m.

OUTDOOR FIRE BAN IN EFFECT FOR GREATER SUDBURY

The City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services advises residents that due to weather conditions, an outdoor fire ban is in effect in all areas of Greater Sudbury until further notice.

Under this ban, all burning permits are suspended, and all open fires are prohibited.

The outdoor fire ban is in effect to reduce the risk of human-caused fire hazards.

For more information on outdoor fire bans, residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1.

Important not to abuse 911

On Sunday May 9^th, 2010, Sudbury Regional Police received a large number of 911 calls through the day that were of inappropriate use of the 911 phone number. Children playing on the phone, misdialed numbers or people calling to seek information of a non-urgent matter were all but one of the 911 calls received through the day.

The 911 phone number should not be misused as it ties up this important emergency number compromising Public Safety.

To contact police for non-urgent or non-emergency information or complaints, the public are reminded to use 675-9171. A call taker will refer you to the appropriate department. Emergency calls should still use 911.

Education of children to the importance of not calling 911 inappropriately is important.

COMMUNITY SAFETY FORUMS

The Greater Sudbury Police Services Board and the Greater Sudbury Police Service are in the process of developing their 2011 – 2013 Business Plan.
A major component of this process relies on identifying the policing priorities of the community we serve, and as such, are holding a series of community consultations to discuss policing and crime issues.
Members of the public are invited to attend a Safety Forum to be held in or near their community. It is a great opportunity to voice safety concerns in regards to policing issues in their respective area.
