Starting Thursday, May 14th, citizens of Greater Sudbury will be given a financial reality check by way of a three-minute public service announcement (PSA) aimed at potential and repeat impaired drivers.

The PSA – featuring Terry Callaghan & Mellaney Dahl from the Q92 morning show, and produced by EastLink TV – focuses on the financial impact of a drunk driving conviction.

The idea to create the message followed an April, 2011 interview with Greater Sudbury Police Chief Frank Elsner, where he discussed the potentially devastating financial impact of an impaired driving conviction. From fines and legal expenses, through mandatory ignition interlock installation, and long-term insurance costs.

“I think this is one aspect of an impaired conviction that many people don’t consider,” said Chief Elsner. “Maybe that’s one reason why we still see impaired driving in Greater Sudbury. Even beyond enforcement, education is key to stopping people from making dangerous decisions. Creative and informative messages like this go a long way in helping us do our job.”

The PSA will be simultcast tomorrow on Q92 and EastLink TV, Thursday May 12, at 7:15 am during Terry and Mell’s show. It will also run throughout regular programming on EastLink TV in the coming months and will be available on www.q92rocks.com; www.gsps.ca/en/specializedservices/traffic.asp (Greater Sudbury Police website); and www.whosyourDD.com (the Sudbury Taskforce to Remove Impared Driving Everywhere – S.T.R.I.D.E.)
Terry and Mell hope that people seeing the video will be shocked enough to think twice about getting behind the wheel after drinking. The overall message is to ‘think before you drink’ and make plans to get home safely before you go out.

“We have the opportunity here to deliver an important message to a lot of people,” said Mell. “We want our listeners to understand every devastating impact of impaired driving, so hopefully the next time they’re out for a couple of drinks, they’ll do the right thing and find a safe ride home.”

Terry said he was shocked when he read the figures. “This is many people’s annual salary”, he said, “let’s get some perspective. A year’s salary versus twenty-five bucks for a cab? To me, that’s a no-brainer.”

Sudbury’s Best Rock, Q92 has partnered with STRIDE in an effort to educate, increase awareness and eventually eliminate impaired driving in Greater Sudbury. Everyone assisting with, and appearing in the spot volunteered their time to the cause:

Terry and Mell, Q92 Morning Show
James Janiszewski, EastLink TV
Sergeant Gary Lavoie, Greater Sudbury Police Service
Josee Repele, Grade 12 student at College Notre Dame (and Mell’s niece)
Kate Furlotte, STRIDE and Rogers Radio Sudbury

(The PSA is on youtube at this location)

Greater Sudbury residents are invited to join the ATV Advisory Panel and City staff at an Open House to discuss a proposed routing map for All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) within the City of Greater Sudbury.
Before a final proposal is brought to Council, a series of open public houses will be held to ensure that everyone has had a chance to consider the issue.

Some of the questions that will be discussed at the Open House include:
Which proposed routing map best represents residents’ needs?
Should ATVs be permitted on local (public) roads within the City of Greater
Sudbury?
Should the already reduced rates of speed in the legislation should be further reduced?
Should the City limit the hours and times of year that ATVs are permitted on the road?
Attend one of the following sessions to have your say in where ATV’s can go, where they can’t, and help shape your community.
