While fortunately we may not be subject to severe earthquakes or natural disasters that occur in other parts of the world, we are not totally immune from events that could cause considerable upset and could threaten our lives – are we prepared?

Besides severe winter snow and ice storms and occasional high winds, flooding and power outages, the CPR rail line traverses the whole of the north shore of one of our major water bodies. A derailment and spilling of hazardous chemicals into Ramsey Lake would be a major disaster.
How we can prepare ourselves for most eventualities, natural or man made will the subject of a special presentation to be made by representatives of the City of Greater Sudbury Disaster Preparation Group to which you are invited and will take place on Sunday evening June 12th in the gymnasium of Minnow Lake Place at 7.00 p.m. Please inform your neighbors and encourage them to attend as well.

Clean Up Blitz Day is on May 7th. The GFCAN is looking for volunteers to participate in this event. While we haven’t chosen the specific area yet (Suggestions are accepted) we do know that no matter where it will be done, it will be time well spent.

Culture Days – Information Sessions – May 10th.

The Sudbury Arts Council has arranged information sessions in both English and French for those individuals and/or groups wanting to arrange a Culture Days event on the weekend of Sept. 30th, Oct. 1st and 2nd. Any type of Arts event (as long as it is free to the public, takes place on these days and is participatory – such as an artist talk or demonstration, workshops, tours, music and/or dance, drama presentations etc). Information sessions are planned for Tuesday May 10th in the foyer at Tom Davies square at 5.00 pm (English) 6:00 pm (French) 7:00 pm (English) with Nazanin Shoja, OAC Culture Days Animator/Coordinator. Please let us know at sac.communicate@gmail.com of your intention to attend and which session.

Family Fun Day – Saturday, May 28th, 2011 – Garson Arena

Following last year’s Family Fun Day at the Garson the Garson Falconbridge Community Action Network will be hosting its 2nd Annual Family Fun Day on Saturday, May 28th, 2011 at the Garson Arena.
Last year’s event saw an indoor Yard Sale, Zumba Dancing, EMS vehicles, Kids activities such as face painting, Bike Rodeo, arts & Crafts and more.

GS Police Service’s seminar on “cyber proofing”

Attention Parents

Do you have all the information you need to keep your children safe on the internet?

On the 31^st of March 2011, officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Service will be holding a seminar on “cyber proofing” in Council Chambers at Tom Davies Square. The seminar is designed to give parents the tools they need to protect children while they are on-line. It’s open to any parent of a child enrolled in a Sudbury school, regardless of the age of the child. The seminar will run from 7-9 pm and will be recorded for later addition to the Services’ website. Lasalle Secondary School hosts Spring Concert

The Lasalle Secondary Music Department invites parents, students and members of the community to attend its annual Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 19th, 2011. Doors will open at 6:30 pm and the concert will begin at 7 pm in the gym at Lasalle Secondary School, 1545 Kennedy Street, Sudbury. Admission is a donation of spare change.

This year’s line up includes performances by all seven of Lasalle Secondary School’s music groups: the Orchestra under the direction of Matt Beatty; the Junior Jazz Ensemble, the Senior Jazz Ensemble and the Senior Concert Band under the direction of Peter Scherzinger; the Intermediate Concert Band and Guitar Ensemble under the direction of Marc Savard; and the Lasalle Choir under the direction of Camille Dupuis and Peter Scherzinger.

During every Spring Concert, the Lasalle music students join together to play a final piece. This year’s number is a musical arrangement of “Halo”, the theme from a popular video game.

Baked goods and refreshments will be on sale during intermission. All proceeds will go towards the Lasalle Secondary School Roots and Shoots Team.

Walk to Fight Arthritis 2011 on Sunday, May 15th at Fielding Park!

The frightening reality of arthritis in our community is that we have the second highest prevalence rate of arthritis in the province with close to 25% of our population diagnosed with one or more forms of arthritis. Arthritis can affect anyone, at any age, anytime and we need your support by participating in our Walk to Fight Arthritis on Sunday, May 15th at Fielding Park! This mission-based event will have registration at 11 am and the Walk will start is 12 pm with a BBQ to follow. This will be a fun-filled day with live entertainment, back massages, kids play area, back scans, Tai-Chi and so much more. You can choose to walk either a 1 km or 5 km non-competitive route or join us on a virtual walk from the comfort of your own home. Join Honourary Chair, Major Meagan McGrath and the Walk to Fight Arthritis committee on May 15th.
